April 2, 2003

Dear friends and supporters,

I would like to share with you some reports of activities that we had in the last few months in the framework of “Doumia~Sakina” - the Pluralistic Spiritual Center of Neve Shalom ~ Wahat al-Salam.

In the winter we hosted some special gatherings:

On December 20, we hosted an evening with Jane Fonda and Eve Ensler. Please see our report at: http://nswas.com/village/updates/women_eve02.htm.

On December 28, we hosted a peace concert for the new year: “Give peace a voice”, for which, please see the report on: http://nswas.com/village/updates/peace_benefit.htm.

On February 9 we hosted Jimmy Twyman (http://www.emissaryoflight.com) for a peace vigil. About 250 people gathered in the auditorium of Neve Shalom ~ Wahat al-Salam and exactly at 7:00 PM we meditated and prayed for peace together with thousands of people around the world. At the end of the evening Jimmy Twyman and his friends who joined to him on this peace mission presented to Neve Shalom ~ Wahat al-Salam a “cloth of many colours”, a ten meter-long quilt made from many colorful pieces that were dedicated for peace and were sent by people from all around the world.

Since the beginning of 2003 we have organized two events:

On February 15, after a short memorial ceremony for Bruno Hussar, we dedicated an evening to his memory and hosted a good friend and neighbour: Father Paul Saouma, the abbot of the Trappist abbey of Latrun. Please see our illustrated report at: http://nswas.com/bhc/updates/fr_paul.htm.

On March 15 we had a wonderful experience with “Shintian”, an original Palestinian woman's monodrama. You can find a report and photos at: http://nswas.com/bhc/updates/shintian.htm.

Upcoming Events

On April 12, we will show a monodrama on a battered woman, "Flowers are not Enough". After the show we will have a discussion in Hebrew and Arabic.

At the end of the month we plan to have a meeting and discussion with the initiators of the Palestinian plan to travel to the Auschwitz concentration camp. The main proponent of the plan is Archimandrite Emile Shoufani, pastor of the Melkite Catholic Community of Nazareth.  A complete description of this initiative can be found in the “Haaretz” newspaper article of February 3, 2003 ("Israeli-Arabs plan trip to Auschwits ”to learn about Jewish suffering”, by Yair sheleg (Article number-967497 in the Haaretz online archive).

On May 10, we plan to have a day of activity to commemorate the Nakbe (Palestinian catastrophe). We will focus upon the destruction of three villages near Latrun (Imwas, Yalu and Beit Nuba) which were destroyed in 1967 by the Israeli army.  We will show slides and hear testimony of refugees and others.

Sincerely,

Dorit Shippin.
